Abstract
-Abstract-
This Quality descriptive study explored the nurses' experiences in sexuality
rehabilitation of clients with spinal cord injury in rehabilitation setting. The purpose of
the study was 1) to explore and describe factors which may influence nurses' feeling of
comfort while the nurses were providing nursing care for the clients with spinal cord
injury in relation to their sexuality issue; and 2) to explore and describe useful
strategies which the nurses might use to deal with some uncomfortable situations in
relation to patients' sexuality. Participants were selected from a spinal rehabilitation unit
in a metropolitan area in Australia, employing purposive sampling. Data were collected
and analysed using content analysis.
The major categories emerged from the data included two groups of factors that
influenced nurses' feeling of comfort. Each categories had three subcategories:
professional, personal, situational factors. An important finding was the influence of
nurses' perceived knowledge level to nurses' feeling of comfort. Nurses perceived
knowledge level seemed to influence other professional, personal and situational factors
in several ways. Nurses' knowledge and clinical experiences in this study were
understood as preparation for nursing practice in sexuality rehabilitation. unfortunately
most of the participants did not have strong educational supports either from their
formal nurses education program of from their work. Finally, this study included some
suggestions for nurses' education and clinical environments which might help
rehabilitation nurses to provide their clients proper health services in a comfortable way
